Hi Mick,
As designer of the KAT5 system I am almost cetainly the best person to
answer your questions. James has done a fantastic job on the first version
of the FAQ based upon my original design document.
IR control is not possible with the S-video units because there are not
enough pairs in the cable. It is possible to add IR control by adding a
separate wall mounted receiver in each room and IR mini-emitters at the
distant end.
Many people on this list alrady have some form of IR control by means of
HomeVision/Comfort/other_homebrew_stuff.
The AV switcher will be remote controlled initially by InfraRed using a
choice of manufacturers codes to avoid clashes with your existing kit. I
also plan an RS232 option so that any PC or automation controller can drive
it directly.
All audio and video signals are Line Level. The cards with onboard
amplifiers will be approx 30W rms per channel.
The standalone units will be needed to interface to the switcher so they
will not be wasted.
VGA is purely for remote monitors. Adding keyboard functionality would not
be easy, but may come along later. Thee are commercially available units
that do keyboard/mouse/VGA and audio over a single CAT5 but they cost an
arm
and both legs!
KAT5 has been designed as a flexible, affordable solution to whole house AV
distribution and control and will continue to add new features over time.
Hope that helps
Keith
