Flight of fantasy

Chaps,

I was sitting around a bit bored today (working from home), and I started
to
think about designing a new HA system from the ground up. (nothing trivial
then!)

Because I like PC's, and I already have loads of them, and I can sometimes
get more for free, or sometimes get spare parts for free, I decided that I
would make it a PC based system (no surprise there).

Having established that much, I started to think about what I might be able
to do with a PC-based system. (Note I say "PC based" not WINTEL
based, as it
is not specifically windows based, and could just as easily be on Linux...)

I listed some features that I thought were important, and sketched out some
fag-packet type drawings (I don't smoke though!). After a While, I finally
came out with a design for a distributed, multi-master, message-passing
system, with built-in redundancy, and which provides whole house multi-zone
X10, IR, VR, TTS, and MP3 audio over 1 SINGLE CAT5 cable between zones!

Now, it seems to me like it should work as I think it does, (but of course
you may know better!), and it is nothing more than a flight of my fantasy
at
the moment, but I'd sure be interested to know what any other seasoned
HA'ers make of my ideas...

Trouble is, it is only in existance as a Word 2000 document at the moment,
as it contains a Visio 2000 diagram (ASCII graphics just weren't going to
cut it, and if I'd tried i'd be here 'Till Friday!), so I didn't want to
post it to the list and Piss people off. If anyones' interested enough,
drop
me a mail privately, and I'll send it to anyone who fancies a look...

Cheers.

Paul G.

(PS, I should mention that not _all_ of the software required for this
design exists yet, some "glue" code would need to be custom
developed to
fit all the components together..)
