I've gotten an update. The PLC chips should be available this month (<$2)
and the wireless chips next month (<$3).
The PLC chips do both Insteon and X-10 while the wireless chips only do
Insteon.
I still have serious reservations about SmartLabs license restrictions so I
probably will not do anything with these, since there is no way to buy them
without submitting to their license terms, but I do plan to look into
designing some wireless generic input devices (ADC and/or DIO) using
something like the Chipcon CC1100 transceiver.
