Why not use the built in type vacuum cleaner outlets??  They not only
have a "cap", but a spring loaded cover.  They sit flush and look
relatively attractive.  You'll just have to explain to the wife that she
can't plug in the vacuum hose there and expect anything to happen.  :-)
