They've changed the rules a little, a few years ago. Used to be that
you had to sign a statement saying you were sole proprietor, and you
didn't have to show up. A few years ago I received notice that no one
is automatically exempt and you must send them a letter requesting
exemption and state the reason. If I remember right they sent me a
request for corporate tax and/or payroll info and then they sent an
exemption. A few months ago, I think they think that they sent me
another notice to appear (unregistered mail). I never got it in the
mail. The post office isn't perfect, I guess.
