Except that you'd need all the other apps converted to Linux too -
especially xPLMediaNet - and I don't see that happening any time soon!

While booting from a CD or CF card sounds appealing, it's a load of
hassle and offers minimal benefit over just chucking a hard drive in
there.  You don't gain any extra stability with a CF boot - you still
need all those same flaky drivers for the rest of the hardware.  If you
want to be able to restore the state, the easiest thing to do is just
burn an an image of the configured machines hard drive onto DVD.

Spyware etc mostly comes from web browsing and installing dodgy
applications (and no xPL apps have spyware in them!), so assuming you
have a firewall in place, you shouldn't get any on your server machine.
Normal anti-virus software will protect you against the rest.
