I've never done anything with RS485, but if this stuff is being connected
to a PC (for db lookups I presume in the case of the card reader) then why
not implement the xpl side as PC software, allowing your 485 network to
pootle along with little interruption...

The above may clearly highlight my lack of 485 knowledge... appologies in
advance..
