Yep  this can be done , but the devices on the rs485 network  require to be
polled unless some fancy collision detection is built into the devices as
they all may want to speak at the same time ....

My thoughts were to have a smart xpl- rs485 gateway and it would poll the
devices to ensure all is ok and pass hbeats and status changes back to
xpl...Likewise it would pass xPL messages to the intended target........
