The Rio-branded boxes have better BIOS debugging. Specifically, if
they are unable to find an SSDP server[1] (the second stage in the
boot sequence after getting an IP address).
Their BIOS eventually (after, I think, 2 minutes) comes up with an
error screen that reports IP address. Hence you can see whether your
Rio has a DHCP-allocated IP address or a "default" 195(?) one.
(The
bit of the IP standard that tells you what IP address range to use if
you can't find a DHCP server.)
Other than that, I've not come across any differences between the
different firmwares using the bundled server software, Mock server,
JReceiver or xPLRioNet.

Mark
(2 Dell-branded, 5 Sonic/Rio-branded, all running xPLRioNet)
[1] It's worth noting that it isn't _quite_ an SSDP server it's
looking for. The Rios were released before the SSDP specification was
ratified and use a beta draft which was changed slightly. Hence the
need for a dedicated SSDPish server in Rio server software rather than
assuming a vanilla one will work - doh!
