That sucks.  The first thing that springs to mind rather than xPL is
spike-filled pits around the trees.  Make sure they're deep enough so
you only have to back-filll them afterwards though - lol!

IIRC the old xPLRioNet had a picture capture feature - check through the
archives to see if it's what you need.  It's very simple to capture
still frames from digital cameras/scanners/webcams in Windows (the
platform SDK includes straightforward support), but I don't know about
video.
