I've had pretty good luck, but do some research beforehand (to make sure
the
device is known to work).  I got a 8-port serial adapter (one USB plug to 8
serial ports) from vscomm and it just plugged in and worked -- instantly
showed 8 new /dev/ttyUSBx (x=0-8) devices.
