Re: RS485 - XPL on the wire

Must get faster at typing... whole stack of messages just arrived.

The reason for 485 from my viewpoint is (a) cheap (b) simple
interface (c) plenty of information (d) I've spent too many years
working with EPOS equipment. Yes, retry has to be in the protocol(s)
in a multi-master situation like XPL. Collision detection at a basic
level can be done by monitoring the outgoing char and the LRC adds
some error checking (single bit error).

Canbus is a good alternative now but PCI cards are rare and expensive
(assuming one end is a PC). An Ethernet<->Canbus XPL converter may be
a better bet.
