You don't *have* to... it would be nice, sure.. but the zones can be
just called "zone 1", "zone 2" and use xplhal to handle
them with nicer
names.

Not a problem - the user can get xplhal to poll at the required
interval.

Hell yeah - what's better, a device that does a job but could be better,
or a device constantly in development?
