This one was a big decision in the past - to not send anything over xPL
except the core stuff. We don't send HTML for instance, preferring to
send a URL.
My own gut instinct would be to use standard protocols wherever
possible, and HTTP is a well supported, easily embeddable way to move
images around - it's also good in that it opens up the tools to
alternative uses :)
