Paul,
You mentioned before you were going to access the image over UNC or via
a file:// url ? Is this still the case or is it now doing an http:// for
the image.  I use http:// here on vista and don't get crashes even when
a  dodgy frame turns up. If you are just uploading an image via ftp and
not doing it very often, try uploading it to a different file name and
once uploaded issue a rename command. That may help as you won't get a
corrupt image, in theory.
