Hi Pete,

=20

I used to use IFTTT but the delays and reliance on a good internet
connecti=
on did away with that option.

=20

Node-red running on a Raspberry Pi3 would be an ideal replacement for your
=
timers issue. Peter Scargill has created an awesome script that if run on
a=
new installation of Debian, will download and install everything you need =
for home automation including Alexa integration via HABridge. His BigTimer
=
for Node-red is wonderful for setting up timings etc. It also installs the
=
Mosquitto MQTT server so if you are familiar with righting code for the
Aru=
dino and use the ESP8266 modules, you have a great way to roll your own
and=
make them reliable (depends on your coding skills of course but Peter Scar=
gill, yes him again, has a very stable code base for the ESP8266 that can
r=
un on Sonoff modules)

=20

There is also a Squeezebox module for Node-red but I am not familiar with
w=
hat it can do as I don=E2=80=99t have any devices.

=20

Some useful links for Peter=E2=80=99s stuff.

I'm lucky enough to have 2 houses:

=20

My selfbuild home in Ireland has CBUS and Comfort, and my London home has
S=
T.

=20

Have to admit these are two very different experiences:

My ST set up uses Fibaro micro modules, hacked SONOFF and also links to
Hiv=
e and Echo. However it needs the Cloud to do even the basic things, which
=
just wouldn't work in my flaky 4G connected holiday home. One example of
t=
he difficulty is that it is not possible to automate a fan to turn off on
a=
timer with ST without some cloud hops via IFTTT etc. That just seems basi=
c missing functions to me.

It certainly isn't robust and needs a a lot of checking to see what is (or
=
rather isn't) working. Thankfully there is good logging and status
checkin=
g in the online console.

This was all put in to replace an old X10 based system which allows it to
j=
ust about meet the WAF, but mainly due to being better than before.=20

Integration with Hive (soon to be replaced with Wiser) and Logitech Hub
are=
hardly used and these systems work well standalone with Echo, and ST adds =
very little.

Note there is an Amazon project to develop a skill for Echo to control
Sque=
ezebox, but this seems to have stalled and only has basic functionality at
=
present.

Having CBUS and Comfort in a separate environment gives quite a contrast -
=
it just does everything so well! I miss the Echo to control lights - (so
m=
ay go down the route Paul describes, but it seems such a faff!), but
Comfor=
t even makes X10 work. I'm not sure I'd add ST to this system (even if I
h=
ad the broadband), as I think the extra gimicky functionality would come
at=
a massive reduction to reliability and WAF.

Pete
