Re: Review: BMW i3, My First Drive in an Electric Car

It's a popular debate, Mark, but my perspective paints a slightly
rosier pi=
cture.

Winter tyres work better than summer tyres below 7 degrees. Certainly, by
t=
hat temperature, I can feel my P-Zeroes 'going off'. Fitting the winter
tyr=
es when the temperature drops is very effective. You certainly don't have
t=
o wait for snow to benefit from them; I used winter tyres from November to
=
April, last season and the car drove flawlessly.=20

In terms of cost, there's a capital cost, sure. But while the winter tyres
=
are on, the summer tyres aren't being used. The cost of tyres over the
life=
time of the car is negligible.=20

As for wheels, I bought a secondhand set of alloys from eBay. When I
finall=
y no longer need them (when I buy a car that they don't fit), I'll sell
the=
m again on eBay and probably get my money back.=20

Alternatively, you can have a tyre shop swap tyres on existing rims, but
ov=
er time that will be more expensive and risks damage.=20

It makes me laugh that people will pay =C2=A340k or more for a car, but
don=
't see the value of spending another few hundred to keep it on the road 12
=
months of the year.=20

Winter tyres aren't at all popular in the UK, because they're not mandated
=
and people don't know enough about them. Our continental cousins can
certai=
nly teach us a thing or two on the subject.=20

Regards,
Steve
