But winter tyres are not just about extra grip in snow (although they make
a
big difference), they offer a lot more grip in colder/wetter conditions
too.
So it's simply a case of having a much better performing tyre for winter
weather that ultimately makes your driving easier and safer. Mine go on as
soon as daytime temps drop below 7-8 degrees and don't go back on in the
spring until temps are consistently above that figure again. So that means

months typically on winter tyres where I live and no worrying if there is
snow in the forecast. I just have the tyres swapped at my local tyre garage
so I've only got the cost of the tyres rather than an extra set of wheels
too, but this evens out over their lifetime as the wear on both sets is
halved due to only being used for half a year.

Yeah, like I said in my reply - "on standard tyres etc"
The problem with the UK is that Snow is never a certainty. Even in
the years we get it, it may only be for a few days. Most people won't
(or cant afford) to invest in a whole other set of wheels and tyres
for the sake of the odd day here and there. If snow was a permanent,
predictable, significant part of our winters then I'm sure that would
change though.
