RE: [ukha_d] Re: >2TB disks on WHS

The problem is that 32bit processor (or OS) only uses a 32bit address
bus. This gives it 2^32 possibles addresses. With RAM addresses each is
1 byte so you can only have 4GB. With hard drives though, each address
is 512 byte sector. 2^32 * 512 = 2199023255552bytes. Hard drives you
powers of 10 rather that 2 (1,000 bytes = 1KB rather than 1,024) when
advertising sizes so you get 2.19TB.

The newer hard drives that use
the 4K sectors should be able to address 8x more memory, WHS though
doesn't support this and you have to run them with 512 byte sectors so
you still only get 2.19TB.

Thanks all.

So am I correct in saying that all paths
up to the disk have to support 64-bit ? Processor -> OS -> RAID card
?

It sounds like I'm indeed stuck if WHS (v1) is limited to 32
bit.
