As far noice goes, yes it is loud (this is subjective of course!!).
With the stock fans -4x 80mm behind backplane 2x 80mm rear exhaust - It is
too loud, at least for me... You can get an idea of the noise from the
video on the xcase website.
Although I have my node0 in a closet with other wiring/meters etc. it would
still be too loud as this closet is in the corridor leading to bedrooms..
My solution:
The case can be ordered with a (no cost) a fan bracket which when replaced
with stock unit can mount 3x 120mm fans (see photos) and the rear 80mm fans
can be replaced. From this point it becomes a trade off between noise and
temp.
I used Fans: 3x Xilence Red Wing 120mm Quiet Fan - 3&4pin connection
- 2x Sharkoon Silent Eagle 2000 80mm Case Fan - 3pin and 4pin Connector -
the noise, while still there, is nowhere near the noise from original -
more like a big modern desktop with a couple of high end graphics cards.
With unraid the system rarely has all drives spinning at once (unless
start-up or pairty check)- right now I am doing preclear on 6 drives in the
case - very very disk intensive - the temps are between 38c to 42c. I am
using 7200rpm drives which run hotter than lower power 5400rpm drives.
There are others on unraid forum running this case (called NORCO in US)with
LP/Green drives where the temps are in the mid 20's. But in normal use the
system spins down the drives when idle and only spins the drive(drives)
where the requested file is located. So rarely would the system have all
drives spinning - but I am sure with 20 drives the accumulated heat may be
higher.
The temps on my system are a little too high for my liking, so I may
experiment with some silent(ish) 2000rpm 12mm fans to see I can get temps
down to mid 30's with all drives at full spin.

As far as Active directories go, all I know is that the Pro version of
unraid supports them. I have never used them in my home system - not much
need for complicated security to just access movies...
