Managed switches are generally noisier and more power hungry than the
domestic sort, and the managed functions are rarely needed. I've turned
my managed netgear switch off in favour of a brace of desktop switches
(neatgear "blue" and zyxel gigabit ones) as it was too noisy.
Some
people have removed/disconnected the fans without any apparent
detrimental affects though.

I would certainly recommend working out how much extra it would cost to
run a managed one 24x7 and whether you'd need to do anything to handle
the additional heat  it would generate (extra heat is useful in winter,
but not if it's accumulating in a sealed cupboard :-)
