Jim was being humorous. The original quote simply said "unexposed
film" (nothing mentioned about development), so as soon as it sees any
light it will become exposed film.

I still use "real" film (slide film) in a 1950's stereo camera
and a Russian Medium format camera (Sputnik) :)
