Network and Broadband Speed Monitoring

Can anyone recommend a monitoring tool that collects info over time on
the speed of your network and broadband links?  (i.e. Not just one of
the one-off test sites.)

I'd like to check both the internal LAN and connection speed to the
internet as our connection speeds seem to be very variable but it's
difficult esablishing a pattern - sometimes it just seems to drop out
for seconds/minutes at a time.  So I need to find something that sits
in the background and shows when and where (in case it is something on
the LAN) things are going out.

Ideally free of course but for something really good I'd pay -
especially if it gave me the evidence to have a go at Virgin/NTL!
