Coming from a MythTV background, this all seems like basic
functionality: myhtbackend can shut down the machine when it's gone
'idle' (n minutes after finishing recording, assuming no frontends are
connected for playback), with optional scripts to check for other
reasons it shouldn't shut down, and for setting an automatic wakeup (by
whatever means - I use WOL from a lower-power 24/7 server) in time for
the next recording in the schedule.

Presumably MCE lacks this kind of provision, but does it not provide any
kind of status interface ("I'm currently recording Eastenders, will
finish at 20:10, next recording is BBC News at 21:58" sort of thing)
you
could parse to extract the required data?

If not, I suppose you could start watching the recordings themselves
(they are just files on disk somewhere, right?), considering the machine
idle n minutes after the last file was written to... hell of a nasty
hack, though.
