Steve, 100% strength with low quality suggests your signal strength is too
high, ie clipping.

Your aerial and new wiring may be *too* good :)
I would get some attenuators and insert inline with the main aeriel feed,
get a selection, maybe adjustable one:

Maplins also sell them I think.
