We have had a smart meter fitted last week and it seems to work well. The
consumption reading should be more accurate that the likes of CurrentCost
(but CC isn't far out). In addition to electricity metering, it also has
the option of gas metering if the appropriate sensor is fitted.

The Siemens installer told me that it has a built-in GSM link and could
send and receive information. As well as making manual meter-reading
redundant, BritishGas can also cut off supply remotely on non-payment of
bills, send messages to the remote display. It also opens up the
possibility of pay-as-you-go type of services like a PAYG mobile phone.
