Distance from bluetooth station.

Has anyone got any ideas/experience on using Bluetooth to detect the
distance from a bluetooth base station?

I want to make a low cost tracking system, but all I'm interested in
is the distance travelled rather than the actual location. I reckon if
I can poll a bluetooth device and get 2 distances, I should be able to
use simple trigonometry to find the distance travelled. (Andy
mentioned XBee on IRC as a cheaper alternative, but I guess that has
the same problem, turning signal strength into distance.)
