There is a Homeseer based solution that works reliably.

The Doomotion plugin can use any Homeseer sensor or set of sensors for
motion detection and can trigger any event or action that Homeseer can
run. Possibly not a cheap solution but it does work.

I use an RFXcom receiver with z-wave PIR sensors, X10 RF PIR sensors
and door sensors. (RF X10 is reliable, unlike the mains variety, and
the US versions are cheap, but of dubious legality.)

The occupancy sensors a monitor every room in the house, and the front
door approach and they also switch lights in the hall, landing and
kitchen stairs. Apart from the initial expense the only neg
ative is that there is a 1-2 second delay before the lights come on.
