RE: [OT]Ground Source Heat Pump running costs

I can see why your bills have been so high in that case, it does sound
like
you have had more than a few problems which have all resulted in excessive
compressor and immersion operation.=20

=20

I run my heat curve with a maximum flow setpoint of 40 degrees and the
weather compensation does not really change this until the outside
temperature is above 10 degrees when the flow temperature then starts to
drop. My controls also switch the heat curve between normal when rooms
require heat and minimum curve (generally sets the flow setpoint at 10
degrees) when all rooms are satisfied. I simply did not agree with my heat
pump supplier that the unit should run 24/7 without room controls and
simpl=
y
rely on weather compensation as the only method of control, there would be
no way of ensuring the heat pump only operated during the off-peak period.

Glad to hear you have the engineer coming back to get it sorted, hopefully
you will see an immediate difference. Once it is all sorted I=92d be
interested to know what you ground loop flow/return temps are with the
compressor running. I=92m still trying to ensure my ground loops are
proper=
ly
balanced and running as efficiently as possible.

Hi Neil

The GSHP feeds UFH, the compressor has been working for 1633 hours since
September and of those 409 have been using the immersion heaters. I know
these numbers are excessive, whilst the loops are not air locked we have
had a number of problems, the first being the external sensor not
working so it was thinking it was always zero degrees outside hence the
numbers. It was also set too high on the heating slope, no one=92s really
been sure of why they needed it so high but I figured out a couple of
weeks ago that a sensor in the accumulator tank for the UFH was also
faulty, this time under-reading hence the need for the high slope.

The suppliers are sending their number one engineer out to me tomorrow
to go through everything as its clearly screwed up. It=92s a technology I
believe in but I was hoping to get a response like yours saying yes its
working just to reassure me =96 thanks.

Regards
Gary

My 200m2 new build looks on target to hit =A31000 for the year and our
GSHP is
an 8kW unit feeding UFH on ground & first floor. All controlled by
Sensible
Heat Hometronic system so should be at least 25% less than standard
controls. Our first proper quarterly bill was =A3380 and we don=92t have
an=
y
other fuel except the leccy. This is after going for an Economy 10
tariff
and ensuring my heating is set to only use the cheaper rate periods. Our
lighting is using much more than our old place =96 we have whole house
lighting control (Helvar Digidim) and LV halogen/incandescent lighting
in
most rooms so that it can all be dimmed. Our last cottage used low
energy
lighting throughout and used less in the entire house than we currently
have
in our kitchen!

Does your GSHP feed rads or UFH? Have you checked the heat pump controls
to
see how many hours the compressor has run to get an idea on how hard it
is
working? Are the ground loops operating effectively =96 mine were air
locked
on first installation meaning my unit used the additional heat from
built-in
immersion heaters which could have resulted in much higher bills if I
had
not spotted the problem and called back the installers. Have you checked
your controls to ensure you are not heating areas to excessive levels or
at
times when you don=92t need heat? Finally have you checked the meter
readings
are correct and not just catching up because previous bills have been
estimated too low?

If anyone out there has one of these and don't mind sharing the
information could I ask how much quarterly electric bills are?

Just had our first quarters bill of living in a building converted last
year meeting all the latest insulation regs and its just short of a
thousand quid (for a quarter)!

Needless to say I've had a bit of a sense of humour failure.

Cheers
Gary
