RE: [OT] Anti-virus / anti-spyware other essential programs?
Once the kids started using the Internet, I put the full version with
malware & spyware protection on and added them to my network license so
I
can see the state of their PC from my admin console.
I think the main problem with AVG is that they've added functionality and
created all these different versions which are good products, but they
don't
tell you about them or make it easy to upgrade. Even as a reseller if I
need
to upgrade a customer from vanilla AV protection to spyware or malware, I
have to get a manual quote raised. It would be good if they could at least
advise you that there's a new product which could offer better protection
even if you choose not to buy it. Of course I could get round to sending an
email to my AV customers, but that requires organisational skills :)
Perhaps
I'll finally do this once the AVG 8 product range is formally announced.

In my case it was the paid for version that missed and wouldn't detect
the Trojan. As soon as I spotted what happened I bought Nod32 for all
the PCs in the house and ditched all the copies of AVG.
I know AVG might consider it product segmentation, but I'd agree with
your view that an AV product to detect the lot...
