video calls: web cam and s/w

I'd like to run video calls with my parents as I only get to see them
f2f a few times a year.  There are loads of web cams around but can
anyone recommend any that offer
+ good picture quality in typical indoor light,
+ good depth of field so that grandchildren etc can be seen playing
without having to put them directly infront of the camera
+ easy set-up/ easy of use (esp for remote end)

What s/w would people recommend for this - does skype do this?
