Yup, it works, I just registered via my UK-based media server, and am
now
accessing the site directly from the US.

Peter - take a look at Slingbox for him, if you've got a decent ADSL
connection at home...I've been using one for a couple of months (over a
crap
connection) and it's pretty good.

You could sign him up from here using your UK IP address, and email him the
login details - He should then be able to use it without the need for a
VPN.
It would be useful to know if this works!
