I've been considering doing something similar for a while but using
Linux with a fullscreen browser and a LinITX touchscreen and then
writing a Javascript-based control app on my server for the browser to
access(think tabletop lounge AV/automation control or bedroom alarm
clock/music control).
I'd be thinking of booting off CompactFlash using something like this:

but the price of the Viglen unit looks very attractive.
