Fw: HDMI over CAT5

  • Subject: Fw: HDMI over CAT5

Morning all

Yes, I have a bunch of HDMI over CAT5 units - the CMI ones - about =A350 a=
=20
pair.

And yes, i ditched them in favour of some 15m long cables from CPC
(=A317=20
each).=20

Every device you have that is active in a HDMI chain will have a part to=20
play in getting that signal to the destination - HDMI is all about the=20
software on each device because it's a 2 way 'protocol'. That's where
all=20
the problems start.

Going from a Sky HD and Popcorn via a matrix via HDMI baluns to the PJ and=
=20
Plasma caused weird issues in the combo - mostly where the plasma
wouldnt=20
get an encryption lock - and you'd be staring at a screen of static (the=20
unencrypted signal).

Also, the 4way matrix doesnt always like the plasma, but likes the=20
projector. Bought a mega cheap matrix from the US, and that likes the=20
projector but hates the plasma (always thinks it's a YUV colourspace).=20
What I've ended up with is the 4waymatrix feeds the plasma, but the output=
=20
for the PJ goes via the second matrix (input1, output1) . This appears
to=20
work beautifully. So as long as the end device talks to something it=20
likes, it's ok.=20

Good luck with HDMI - it really is a lucky draw once you get past a=20
one-one connection. But Im glad I did - was getting fed up with the KAT5=20
signal - it was never that great with RGB/YPrPb and now I have a rock=20
solid picture. The PJ only has RGBHV inputs, so using a HDFury to
convert=20
from HDMI down to RGBHV.

PS - tried a Philips and a LG LCD - brand new one - they didnt like either=
=20
matrix - so didnt bother with device 3 for now - still going over a SVideo=
=20
lead.

Hi Rob,

The feedback I got when I asked recently was that they (at least the=20
cheaper
ones) were a bit pants, to the point where at least one person (Gareth)=20
had
binned them in favour of a long HDMI cable...

That's what I'm now doing for a 10m run - I just have to decide whether to
buy a =A315 HDMI cable, or splash about around =A355 for a
"better" one.

HTH,

Tim.
