The primary drive in WHS is used as a "landing zone" - files
are
initially placed there and then moved to the other drives. This is
assuming that you're using WHS' own distributed file system. If I
remember correctly it also creates 'tombstones' for the files in the
file system on the primary which tell it where the real files are
located. I have issues with the way that it distributes files around
e.g. they tend to cluster on one main drive with the copies
distributed on other drives
I just use my WHS machine for backups - I don't store any media on mine.
