I'm 99% sure it'll step down to what ever the motherboard will
support.
Have you looked at Crucial's website?  You can put the motherboard details
in and it'll tell you what memory is supported.  You don't necessarily need
to buy their memory but I find it useful to double check the specs of what
you need to buy.

I'm hoping this isn't OT as it's for a music server.

I've got a mobo which says 266 or 333 MHz DDR RAM is suitable. Can I
put 400 MHz in it but just accept it won't run at 400 MHz, or do I
have to find the right speed?
