RE: 'Best' format for ripped DVDs?

I use DVDFabDecrypter to do exactly that. I rip only the main movie,
omitting any/all alternate languages, subtitles, additional soundtracks,
extra features, copyright warnings, blah-de-blah-de-blah.

I don't do *any* additional compression of the DVD material, and I
retain it in .VOB format. Missing out all the "crap" typically
saves me
anywhere from 1 to 4GB per DVD. (Some DVD's had 2 copies of the movie on
them!)

I've recently re-ripped most of library this way, (like you, I
originally ripped a complete image with all the extras left in) - mainly
because I'd filled my 2TB array. By so doing, I liberated something like
400GB of disk space, - enough to keep me going for a few more months of
ripping!.

DVDFabDecrypter is stunningly simple to use... (I can do it!) - Oh, and
it also does a jolly god job of ripping compressed copies to put on my
Archos too... - which a lot of the previous tools I'd tried failed to
do...

Subject: [ukha_d] 'Best' format for ripped DVDs?

A while back I started experimenting with ripping DVDs and serving
these from a NAS. I've got this all up and running nicely.

However, I'm now wondering if I went down the right route with
formats. To keep it simple I originally ripped the DVDs as straight
copies (i.e. Video_TS with .VOB files). I wanted to make sure I kept
the same quality as on the DVD so didn't really want to introduce
compression and loss of quality (we watch on a 50" plasma not an
ipod).

But I'm wondering if there is a 'better solution'. Do some of the
other formats offer no (appreciable) loss of quality but chapters
markers, no dvd copyright blurb, better (lossless) compression. I'm
not too bothered about keeping the DVD menu either. (But must keep 5.1)

Thoughts?
