Well, you *SHOULD* eject or dismount the drive before turning it off and
part of the eject/dismount process is to park the drive heads and spin down
the drive safely ...

... however as I said in my previous reply to Jims email most drives do use
the EMF generated by the platters as they spin down to park the heads but
that is *SUPPOSED* to be a failsafe function, not something to be used
every
time.
