The Owl measures only current and so only approximates the actual
power consumption (I would also guess that the current measurement is
not greatly accurate itself across the range), whereas more dedicated
metering devices measure VA and likely to measure current signal more
accurately. Having said this I suppose even a rough sense of energy
consumption is useful, but it should be stated clearly on the product
since I can imagine many people either taking things too seriously or
starting to have fights with their energy suppliers :-)
As Paul has mentioned, the IDRATEK system can be interfaced to
suitable meters. If an IDRATEK system is already in place then the
extra cost of adding a meter is small. For no further cost
information from the metering can then be distributed across the
system, displayed, spoken out, logged, graphed, remotely monitored,
thresholds acted upon, etc. In other words, as is the usual mantra,
the whole is greater than the sum of the parts ... :-)
