Re: Setting up a WiFi Link

Firstly,

Really line of sight, and direct line of sight does not always mean it will
work good.
You also need to work out fresnel (fra-nel) zone stuff to take into account
any thing
within a certain raduis of that line of sight such as the ground, or any
walls which
rise up etc.

Trees are a big no no. In winter your fine. But leaves suck up microwave
energy
because of the water contained.

Your easiest hardware set up for bridging 2 networks is

2 Linksys WAP (wireless access points), and 2 directional dishes.

Use the link calculator on that page to determine what you will need to get
power wise.

Linksys routers / WAPs can have their power output boosted to 500mw, which
is the
legal limit in the UK I believe, and you can do this by putting on custom
firmware.

As you can boost the power on the linksys you can downgrade the power of
the dish
that you might need to use for another set up.

You also need to be very careful of your overall power output taking into
consideration
both the output of the router/WAP, and also the dish as it can be very easy
to go over
the UK legal limit.

You can use the calculator here to work out the outputs, and if you are
going over the
limit. You can also work out fresnel zones, and also work out the crazy
phenomenon
of diffraction where signal can still get over obstructions to a certain
extent, although
very unlikely trees and other water containing stuff as said before.

Subject: [ukha_d] Setting up a WiFi Link

Hi All,

Anyone got any pointers on getting ethernet over a 250M air gap using
off the shelf wifi bits and pieces.

Thanks

Stuart
