Re: Re: NAS hard disk and backup?
Whilst more than you want at the moment I have just bought an Infrant
ReadyNAS unit. These units can be bought with only a single drive in and
then expanded as you need it. The same goes for the raid level. I jumped
in at the deep end got a 2Tb unit. Formats to 1.3 with XRaid. It is a lot
better than my current Ethernet 300Gb unit - more robust, faster, better
web interface, security etc. etc. It's only a few days but my impressions
are good so far. It also runs cold to the touch with only a low speed fan
running. The disks are noisy when they spin up by comparison.
Finally, there is a backup facility to copy some or all data to a locally
attached USB drive (plugged into the ReadyNAS unit i mean). This can be
scheduled or there is a button that can be programmed for any backup
function you please.

I can recommend the QNAP TS201:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-000-QN&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=707
I've got it running 2x 500mb Samsung Spinpoint drives Raided. Acts as
network drive for everyone's documents (family doesn't store on local
drives) and holds all the media for the whole house audio.
Proper NAS with web management. Gigabit i/f.
Backups by plugging in a USB drive etc. I think the backup can be
scheduled (set up through web but doesnt need a pc thereafter). TBH I
haven't tried this bit properly.
Simple and quiet and runs as cool as far as I can tell. I set it up
on my desk with the intention of moving to Node 0 but that was 3
months ago. Its quiet enough not to be a problem - a slight fan noise
now and again but better than most PCs.
Works fine with MACs too! and looks neat - it sits next to a MAC mini.
