Lost DVD drive

A mate of mine has 'lost' his DVD drive on his XP PC - it
was working fine then stopped and the usual poking and
prodding won't bring it back. The only recent change he
claims to have made was to load iTunes. Of course, the
drive may have gone belly up, but has anyone else seen this
problem in relation to iTunes, or should he be looking for
something else?
