RE: [OT] Disk recovery
I was going to say "He won't do backups whilst there's a bloke on the
end of
the phone who can get his data back for him - and maybe for free if he
spends enough time looking around for the right tools".
I used to get roped in to sort out peoples PCs when they "weren't
working
right" and you can easily lose a day or more just trying to get the
machine
up and running again whilst trying to keep all their data that they've
spread all over their PC.
Nowadays if it's hardware that's failed then I'll fix it ...
If it's software that's messed up then I'll reinstall the machine back to
its "freshly built" state (Ghost is your friend here) ...
If it's lost data then I've learned it's better not to get involved! (I had
someone - not even a close friend but someone who knows me through work -
phone me at 10:30 last night saying that he'd copied an outlook .pst file
into a directory and had overwritten a newer .pst file by accident and how
could he get back the file he'd overwritten by mistake. I just said he
couldn't. I know that it's *LIKELY* the data was still on the drive and
could be recovered if he hadn't made any more writes to the disc but is it
really worth all that hassle?)
