That's only about =A340 to (all being well) recover lots of what should be
valuable data which seems exceptionally cheap to me ... if he won't pay

then slap him - I'm sure the time you're spending chasing about looking for
cheap-ass solutions is worth more than =A340 to you.

I paid far more for a similar application on the Mac when I had a couple of
drives fail.
