RS232 control of Denon receivers

  • Subject: RS232 control of Denon receivers

I have my receiver setup so that all video sources go into it, it is
then used to switch to whatever I want to watch.

I am about to build a media centre PC that I intend to use to control
lights (I will use X10 for this as that is what I am already using, for
the most part it works well so I don't want to change it), show
caller ID etc

I have the situation where a majority of the time the receiver will be
set to the satellite input, so when a call comes in we will not be able
to see what number it is.

I have had the idea that I can control the input source of the receiver
to be switched to the PC when a call comes in by using the RS232 port,
however the receiver instruction manual says not to connect the RS232
port to a computer.

I have a number of questions that have come to mind regarding this, I am
hoping someone will have the answers to:

* Does anyone have any ideas what I can use to switch the receiver
source =96 preferably computer controlled?
* Is it generally possible to use the RS232 port to print something
to the OSD of the receiver?
* Any recommendations for a modem that supports caller ID?
* Does anyone have any suggestions for IR output from the PC so that
it can control other parts of my AV system as well?

Thanks for your help,

Rob
