Dean,
you can put the drive into the PC and as you say, XP will moan about
wrong drivers for almost everything. You can either respond to it with
the XP disk/drivers disks etc, or just ignore it. XP "should" get
up in
safe mode if you ignore all the errors, and you shouldn't lose anything.

Why can't you add the old drive as no.2 in the new system and pull the
data off that way anyhow?
