It has a fan, but is temperature controlled and most of the time is
only
just spinning.

You really do have to put your ear close to it to hear anything!

Interesting to know the Synology unit is quiet. I bought a 'cheap and
cheerful' diskless NAS unit from CPC and shoved in a couple of 500Gb disks.
The unit works well enough, SMB, NFS, FTP, RAID 0,1, etc but is very noisy
(fan etc).

Now that I have decided that 'I need a NAS' I am looking to replace this
with something better. The Synology DS207 is on the list, as is the DLink
DNS-323. The main criteria is it has to be quiet.
