RE: Re: [OT] Help to set up a Virgin cable modem fro broadband
access
Thanks to everyone for the help & suggestions to get my mum up and
running.
Bought her a shiny new Toshiba laptop (EBuyer =A3299 special) which comes
w=
ith
basic Vista and needs some extra memory to get it running a bit faster. The
Virgin setup CD still would not run but I managed to get her through the
manual registration process via the initial limited web access. My next
tas=
k
is to get a wireless router working with the system so she can use the
laptop around the house and then look for a decent webcam so she can make
video calls using Skype or similar.

Not true for Stand Alone Cable Modems (SACM), only Set Top Boxes (STBs).
You will need to power cycle your modem when you change backend
devices (which I never really understood), sometimes the CM doesn't
spot the cable bounce :-(
The Virginmedia platform (xNTL isn't a useful term), doesn't keep
track of customer PCs connected to SACMs, as it tracks everything
through the CM using Option 82 DHCP insertion. Same thing happens
with STB/SACM really, but the autoreg processes haven't (yet) been
harmonized.
Yep, it's the only site that's available, 'cause I audited the ACL :-)
Generally speaking, rather than move CM, I'd always suggest just
asking for another one from the contact centers - the later modems
(200s/250s) are much better if you're whacking away with 20meg/s etc.
