That's not a particularly reliable way to set things up. Can you not use
DHCP with manual IP address? That way the IP address is fixed, but any
changes to the DNS servers will get picked up automatically.

Best I can suggest is to google for your combination of OS, wireless
chipset and AP (ie your DG834G). Wifi is well known for problems like
this unfortunately :-(
