Re: [OT] Help to set up a Virgin cable modem fro broadband access
I've just gone through this for my Sister. Exactly the same - PC was
WinME so disk wouldnt work. I could see I could ping the internet but
couldnt browse.
Now the PC was screwed anyway so I rebuilt to XP. Disk still crashed so
eventually called the support line ;-)
The line needs to be activated - they gave me an IP address that I could
browse to....and then there was a web based activation process. Go through
that, reboot the cable modem and away you go. My assumption is that this is
normally handled by the install disk in the background.
Now I dont have the IP address to hand unfortunately - but for what its
worth ours crashed with "Error 602". So you could claim to be
using XP and use that excuse ;-)

Subject: [ukha_d] [OT] Help to set up a Virgin cable modem fro broadband
access
I'm stuck trying to help my mum set up her PC to use a new Virgin broadband
connection and I live 250 miles away so we are trying to do this over the
phone! Her PC runs Windows ME so cannot use the setup disc provided by
Virgin as it needs Windows 2000 or XP. I'm sure that the cable modem could
be used with a router but am struggling to get Virgin to confirm this. They
keep on insisting that she has to upgrade to XP and use the modem connected
directly or to buy a new computer! Are there any cable broadband users on
the list who can confirm that the modem will work with a suitable router?
If
so then what are the main settings on the router (apart from user name
&
password) that need to be set.
